Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
