Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
