Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
